About Multi-Digit Multiplication

Fourth grade multiplication is where the numbers get big enough that kids can’t just count on their fingers anymore. 24 × 6? You need a real strategy for that. And by the end of fourth grade, they’re expected to handle 2-digit × 2-digit — 47 × 83, that kind of thing — which is a genuine leap in complexity.

This program spends nine weeks getting there, and the order matters. We don’t jump straight to the standard algorithm and hope it sticks. Kids start with place value and area models so they can actually see why 24 × 6 breaks into (20 × 6) + (4 × 6). That visual understanding is what separates a kid who can do multiplication from a kid who’s just following steps they memorized.

How the Weeks Build

The first three weeks focus on multiplying by a single digit — starting with 2-digit numbers, then 3-digit, then 4-digit. Each week introduces the same progression: area models first, then partial products, then the standard algorithm. By Week 3 your child is multiplying numbers like 4,287 × 6 and understanding why the carrying works instead of just doing it mechanically.

Week 4 is the big transition to 2-digit × 2-digit. We slow down here on purpose. Area models for something like 36 × 24 mean breaking both numbers apart and keeping track of four partial products. It’s more to juggle, and rushing past it is how kids end up making errors they can’t diagnose.

Week 5 moves into standard algorithm mastery for 2-digit × 2-digit. Week 6 is estimation — rounding before multiplying to check whether an answer is even in the right ballpark. This is one of those skills that sounds simple but genuinely changes how kids think about numbers. If your estimate says “around 2,400” and the answer comes out to 248, something went wrong, and now you know to go back and look.

The Practical Stuff

Weeks 7 and 8 are where it all comes together. Week 7 is word problems — multi-step ones where kids have to figure out what to multiply and what to add. Week 8 covers properties like the commutative and distributive properties, not as abstract rules but as tools for making hard problems easier. (Knowing that 25 × 7 × 4 is the same as 25 × 4 × 7 = 100 × 7 is a legitimate shortcut, not a trick.)

Week 9 is a full review and assessment. By then, a kid who’s done the work should be able to pick up any multi-digit multiplication problem and have at least two strategies for solving it.

Each week has 5 worksheets with full answer keys. The first worksheet or two usually review and warm up, the middle ones dig into new material, and the last one mixes everything together. Print what you need, skip what’s too easy, repeat what’s not clicking yet.
