8th Grade Common Core Worksheets

The last year before high school. Linear functions and real algebra. Argumentative writing as a craft. Twelve packs covering most of 8th grade Common Core — our deepest middle school catalog.

Eighth grade Common Core exists to make ninth grade survivable. Almost everything in the standards is here because high school assumes you’ve got it. Most of the year is about consolidating skills from K-7 into something that will carry into Algebra I, biology, English I, and whatever your state requires for a high school transcript.

Our 8th grade catalog is the deepest of our middle school offerings — twelve packs covering math, ELA, science, and social studies.

What 8th Grade Common Core Covers

Math is where real algebra finally arrives. Functions show up properly — recognizing functions, defining and comparing them, working with linear functions in slope-intercept form, interpreting rate of change. This is the single most important topic of the year; everything in high school algebra builds on it.

Beyond functions, the standards cover solving linear equations in one variable (including those with rational coefficients), systems of two linear equations, the radical and integer exponent rules, and the Pythagorean theorem in three forms (the formula, the proof, applications). Geometry includes congruence and similarity through rigid transformations, plus volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres.

ELA’s headline is argumentative writing. By year-end, kids should be able to write a multi-paragraph argument with clear claims, evidence from credible sources, anticipated counterarguments, and proper citation. Literary analysis deepens — analyzing themes, author’s craft, and the relationship between a literary work and its historical or cultural context. Grammar covers verbals (gerunds, participles, infinitives), active and passive voice, mood, and the conventions that need to be locked in before high school.

Science is typically earth and space science in 8th grade — the structure of the universe, the solar system, plate tectonics, weather and climate, the rock cycle. Aligned to common middle-school NGSS expectations. Social studies focuses on geography and world cultures.

What’s Live for 8th Grade Common Core

Three math packs cover the year’s core algebra and geometry. Functions & Linear Relationships handles the function concept, linear functions in slope-intercept form, rate of change, and the work with multiple representations of linear relationships. Expressions & Equations covers solving linear equations in one variable, systems of two linear equations, and the radical and integer exponent rules. Geometry handles the Pythagorean theorem, congruence and similarity through rigid transformations, and the volume formulas for cones, cylinders, and spheres.

For ELA, three packs cover the year. Argumentative Writing covers position-taking, evidence-based argument, counterarguments, and multi-paragraph essay structure. Literary Analysis covers theme analysis, author’s craft, and historical/cultural context. Grammar & Mechanics handles verbals, active/passive voice, mood, and the conventions expected before high school.

For science, Earth & Space Science covers the universe’s structure, the solar system, plate tectonics, weather and climate, and the rock cycle.

For social studies, Geography & World Cultures covers physical and political geography, comparative cultures, and geopolitical literacy.

High School Prep Sequencing

Most families’ math sequencing in 8th grade is: functions first (it’s the keystone), then expressions and equations (which use the function thinking), with geometry as a parallel track or strong spring finish. Don’t let functions get pushed to the spring — too much else in the year assumes them.

For ELA, argumentative writing is the centerpiece — most families spend the most calendar time here. Literary analysis and grammar run in parallel. Read a substantial novel or two during the literary analysis pack rather than relying only on the worksheet excerpts.

Algebra-Readiness Check

If your kid is going into Algebra I in 9th grade and you want to assess readiness, the key checkpoints are: can they solve a multi-step linear equation with variables on both sides, fluently and without aids? Can they graph a line from an equation in slope-intercept form? Can they manipulate expressions with integer exponents? Can they apply the Pythagorean theorem to a real geometry problem?

If yes to all four, Algebra I will land easy. If any are shaky, do the corresponding 8th-grade pack as summer review before high school starts. The first weeks of Algebra I assume these are automatic.

What’s Coming

A standalone statistics pack for 8th grade (the statistics standards are currently woven into other packs rather than standalone) is in development. A 9th-grade Algebra I bridge pack is planned for families homeschooling through high school. An earth science companion pack focused on lab-style investigations is queued.

If anything specific is urgent, tell us.
