5th Grade Common Core Worksheets
Eleven standards-aligned packs covering most of 5th grade — the year that wraps up elementary math and opens up multi-paragraph writing. The catalog is deep here.
Fifth grade Common Core is one of our deeper grade × framework combinations. Eleven packs spanning math, writing, grammar, and science. It’s the last year of elementary, and Common Core packs a lot in — fraction operations finish out, decimal place value extends to thousandths, writing graduates into three distinct modes (narrative, informational, opinion), and grammar conventions tighten significantly.
Most families we hear from start hunting for outside material in either 4th or 5th grade — that’s when boxed curricula stop fitting or stop sequencing well, and parents start cherry-picking. Our 5th grade catalog reflects that demand.
What 5th Grade Standards Cover
Math finishes the integer-and-fraction story that started years ago. The big year-end expectations: fluent multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm; division with whole-number divisors and dividends through four digits; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with unlike denominators; understanding the decimal place value system through thousandths; converting within and across measurement systems; volume of rectangular prisms; basic coordinate plane work (Quadrant I only — all four quadrants wait for 6th grade).
ELA gets meaningfully harder. The reading expectations focus on textual analysis — identifying themes across multiple texts, comparing authors’ perspectives, using textual evidence to support inferences. Writing splits into three formal modes with multi-paragraph structure expected in each. Grammar moves into the perfect tenses (have walked, had walked, will have walked), commas in compound sentences, and the start of mechanics that high school will assume.
What’s Live
For math, three core packs cover the year. Fraction Operations walks through adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions across nine weeks — including the trickier work with unlike denominators. Decimals & Place Value extends place value to thousandths and covers decimal operations and powers of 10. Measurement & Data handles unit conversions within and across systems, volume of rectangular prisms, and line plots with fractional units.
The writing trifecta is fully live for 5th grade Common Core. Narrative Writing covers multi-paragraph stories with developed characters, dialogue, and pacing — transitions, sensory details, varied sentence structure. Informational Writing is research-based writing that pulls facts from multiple sources into a coherent structured piece. Opinion / Persuasive Writing is taking a position, supporting it with reasons, and starting to anticipate counterarguments — the precursor to real argumentative writing in middle school.
Conventions are covered by Grammar & Punctuation — verb tenses including the perfect tenses, commas in series and after introductory elements, titles and quotation marks, frequently confused words.
For science, Physical Science is live and aligned to NGSS — properties of matter, mixtures and solutions, energy transfer, and the water cycle.
Suggested Sequencing
There’s no single right order, but most families work through it roughly as: fractions in fall (it’s the longest pole — start early), decimals after fractions are mostly locked in (since the conceptual link makes decimals easier once fractions are solid), measurement and data as a stretch through the year (it overlaps with science work), and the three writing packs spread across the year — narrative in fall, informational in winter, opinion in spring is a typical sequence.
Grammar runs alongside writing — there’s no good reason to do all the grammar in one chunk. Spread the pack across the year, doing one week of grammar per week of writing.
What’s Coming
A 5th-grade reading comprehension pack for both fiction and informational text is in active development. A coordinate-plane intro pack (extending the Quadrant I work into more complex coordinate problems) is queued. A life-science pack for 5th grade is planned but not started.
